How to FaceTime with your Family Over the Holidays

Hopefully if your reading this blog you have a Mac. Well, we're going to assume you do. If not your going to have to use Skype.

So far we've got at least three holidays coming up: Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. For Thanksgiving, you may set up a computer in an empty spot at your Thanksgiving Table. For Christmas you might use your iPhone or iPad to FaceTime with your parents as your kids open up their presents.
At New Years maybe you could FaceTime the fireworks to your cousin or friend. There are endless possibilities to all the things that you could FaceTime for. The only problem is you don't know how to use it.

Luckily, you've come to the right place! I'm just going to start out with the basics. First, you obviously have to own FaceTime. You can move your little cursor to the Mac App Store and search "FaceTime". It should pop up right away. Now, for a service like this you can't expect to have it for free. So you can give up a dollar and buy it on your Mac. If you have a FaceTime enabled device, it should be on there already. However, the calls themselves are completely free of charge! I FaceTimed my family in the U.S from Africa and it worked perfectly fine.

Once you have your FaceTime, it's time to go through a couple easy steps to set it up. You should already have a Apple ID if you have it on Mac, but if you don't, just go ahead and go to https://appleid.apple.com to set one up! Either way, you will be prompted to enter your Apple ID and Password. Once you enter this, it will prompt you if you want to use your Apple ID account email or if you would like to use another email. If you want to use another email, just enter it there. If you want to use another email, you will have to answer the Verification Email that Apple will send you. Once you do this, all of your contacts from your Address Book will appear in your in-app Contacts list. Just find the friend or family member you want to FaceTime with, and hit their email or mobile number!

Now, you may be saying to yourself, "How do I know if a friend is available for FaceTime?" Well, you don't. You can tell if their email is linked TO a FaceTime account, but other than that it will ring them and if they answer voila! You are connected Face-to-Face. If they don't answer, you should receive a message saying "Person is not available for FaceTime". The best way to make sure that you gain contact with your recipient is to call them first and make sure that they are ready to FaceTime.

Once you have completed these steps, you are on your way to a fantastic evening talking to your family in another city, state, or even country.
